News-Antique.com - Sep 19,2016 - · Estimated to sell for £1,500 at the September 29-ending auction
· Originally owned by the Duke of Edinburgh's godson, David Fiennes-Gregory
· Accompanied by a note from Charles and Diana and a presentation box
A slice of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake is to sell at UK memorabilia dealer Paul Fraser Collectibles' Historical Rarities auction.
The slice of fruitcake, which has cream cheese frosting, is expected to make £1,500 at the September 29 2016-ending auction due to its rarity and excellent condition.
The cake is still edible 35 years after the wedding thanks to its high alcohol content.
It comes in a white and silver presentation box that bears the badge of the Prince of Wales, a Charles and Diana monogram, and the location and date of the wedding reception: 29th July 1981, Buckingham Palace. In the box is a note that reads: "With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses The Prince & Princess of Wales."
The cake has superb provenance, originally coming from David Fiennes-Gregory, godson of the Duke of Edinburgh.
The head baker of the Royal Naval cooking school, David Avery, created the cake – which took 14 weeks to finish.
Daniel Wade of Paul Fraser Collectibles comments: "This piece of cake is tasty, quirky but most of all, historic. That's because the cake was there at 'the wedding of the century', as Charles and Diana and their guests enjoyed the reception at Buckingham Palace, as they had their first dance, and as they left for their honeymoon.
"This slice gives us a tantalising glimpse into a world most of us will never know."
The cake is open for bidding at Paul Fraser Collectibles' Historical Rarities online auction, hosted by JustCollecting. The auction runs until Thursday, September 29.
The auction also features a Charles and Diana signed Christmas card from 1988, estimated at £1,500.
