News-Antique.com - Sep 13,2016 - DALLAS – Blue Pilaster II – Morris Louis’ 1960 masterwork of Color Field painting – will be offered at public auction of Modern & Contemporary Art Nov. 11, 2016 by Heritage Auctions in New York.
The painting is a breathtaking example of Louis’ best known style that exists at the nexus of gestural and rough Abstract Expressionism with the forthcoming ideas of object hood in Minimalism, said Ed Beardsley, Vice President of Fine Art at Heritage Auctions.
“Certainly, in Blue Pilaster II we witness the infamous technique employed by Louis that he devotedly used throughout his oeuvre: staining,” Beardsley said. “All of his stained paintings involved pouring thinned Magna paint (an acrylic resin) on unstretched and unprimed canvas, allowing the paint to take its own course and soak through the canvas resulting in an optical gesture of color and movement, creating a way in which the paint truly becomes one with the surface.”
Presented with a $300,000-$500,000 estimate, Blue Pilaster II also exists as an outsider from Louis' three main series of Veils, Unfurleds, and Stripes. In fact, only a handful of other works are known with this specific singular columnar theme. Louis dedicated his life to his craft, even though he received very little recognition until later in his life. Louis was able to achieve something uniquely his own. Blue Pilaster II encompasses his quiet genius.
When visiting many of the best museums around the world, I have always been drawn to Louis’ work.” said Beardsley, “We are so proud to offer Blue Pilaster II in our auction of Modern & Contemporary Art on November 11.”
