News-Antique.com - Jun 17,2016 - A legendary collection of vintage magic posters - nearly 800 rare images - is now up for sale. The first auction takes place June 25th, 2016.
The collection, carefully assembled by magician Norm Nielsen over the last 25 years, features silent film posters of Houdini, as well as giant billboard-size lithographs advertising contemporary magicians from the art's "golden age."
Nearly 400 posters are included in the first auction, among them dazzling images advertising the magic shows of Thurston, Kellar and virtually every other famous magician of the era spanning 1880 - 1930 and beyond.
Several of the posters - including two Houdini lithographs - are expected to bring as much as $50,000.00 "The Houdini 'Grim Game' one-sheet is among the most desirable of Houdini's posters," said Gabe Fajuri, president of Potter & Potter Auctions, the firm conducting the sale. "The giant three-sheet Houdini Water Torture Cell poster is sure to be another show-stopper," he added.
Several posters going on the block are unique images - the only copies known to exist, according to the auction house's catalog.
"Not all of [the posters] will bring high prices," Fajuri added. "Many lots in the sale have opening bids of just $50 or $100."
A coffee-table book-like catalog has been published to accompany the sale. A companion volume will be released in advance of the second auction, in late 2016.
The "Golden Age of Magic Posters" auction takes place at 10:00 am (CST) on Saturday, June 25th in Chicago. Previews take place in the gallery June 21-24, from 10am - 5pm, CST.
