We have been fortunate to have assisted
News-Antique.com - Feb 24,2016 - This collection includes pottery items alongside sketches, watercolours, paintings and sculptures by James Arnold Martin, and presents us with a most extraordinary previously unseen body of work. His artistic output was various and prodigious and includes many wonderful works including topographic and architectural subjects.
Had he chosen a career as an exhibiting artist, there can be little doubt that James Arnold Martin would have been hailed as one of post war British Arts most singular voices. The originality of his ceramic work and the breadth of his painting is at once striking, original and fresh.
Martin was born on 10th October 1931 in Southsea. A prolific artist, teacher, skilled painter, theatre designer, ceramicist and potter, as well as serving as a British spy and active supporter of the Terrence Higgins Trust.
Martin was considered by many to be a modern Renaissance Man. A long standing resident of Balham, he had a beautifully styled home in the area and whilst he welcomed those who loved to see his pictures, he chose not to sell any of his work.
All of the paintings, ceramics, drawings and ephemera being offered are from the Balham home and studio of James Arnold Martin, and at his request are being sold to benefit the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK (British Diabetic Association) and without reserve.
It is our hope that this sale will firmly establish long overdue recognition of his work.
