With the holidays fast approaching, Gray’s December 9th auction holds a wonderful collection of fine art, furniture, and a brilliant group of jewelry. Among other treasures, lot 294, an 18 karat Yellow Gold Lady’s Graduated Diamond Necklace, stands out for its graceful shape and pairs nicely with its companion Tennis bracelet, lot 295. Another striking pair are lots 289 and 290, An 18kt. Yellow Gold, Aquamarine and Diamond Ring, and matching pendant. And a unique piece, Lot 296 is an outstanding platinum and 14 karat white gold diamond ring, fabulously retro with it’s a-symmetrical design.
This auction begins with a few traditional 19th to 20th century paintings, including lot 3, Fritz van der Venne’s oil, Magyars traveling, and lot 2, Portrait of a Gypsy, by Pál Böhm. Essentially a self-taught painter, Böhm traveled in 1862 at the age of twenty three from his native country of Hungary to Vienna to study and model his work after the paintings at the Belvedere Palace.
Ranging into contemporary art, lot 40, Figures in a Setting, is a lithograph by the prolific artist Henry Moore. Famous for his sculptures, Moore won the International Sculpture Prize at the 1948 Venice Biennale, just one of his many accomplishments. Lots 48 and 49 are two portraits of Don Munroe by Suzan Etkin. Suzan Etkin and Don Munroe collaborated on multiple Andy Warhol film projects. The last project was 'Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes,' an American talk show that aired on MTV from 1985-1987, the year Andy Warhol passed away. Suzan Etkin was the production manager and Don Munroe was the director.
Lot 108 is a Seaform vase by Dale Chihuly, titled Basket for Portland Press, 1997. Chihuly’s investigation of organic plant-inspired forms creates a bridge between traditional functional glass and fine art sculpture; bringing the crafts into a new realm. The center of our Seaform vase is thrown off balance, imitating the beautiful sporadic patterns of motion found in nature. These are just a few of the highlights from this festive and fun 323 lot auction.
Live Preview for the auction is from December 3 – 8, 11am – 6pm, Saturday December 5 from 12noon – 4pm, at Gray’s auction showrooms in Cleveland. The auction house will be closed December 6th. The auction on December 9 starts at 11am; telephone, absentee and live online bidding are available.
