Unique collection of British Political letters for sale A collection of 75 letters from politicians and celebrities written for the book "The Royal British Legion Golden Book of Remembrance" appears on market for the first time in 20 years.
News-Antique.com - May 06,2015 - In 1995, author Henry Buckton published the book The Royal British Legion Golden Book of Remembrance, in association with the Royal British Legion, to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and to raise awareness of the work done by The Royal British Legion.
Buckton asked the great and the good of the time to reflect on the act of Remembrance and the work done by The Royal British Legion.
The Contributors ranged from the then Prime Minister and other senior political figures, to War heroes (including three recipients of the Victoria Cross), church leaders and media personalities.
Each provided a signed contribution, several of which contain introductory notes and multiple signatures.
Victoria Cross recipient Bill Reid's beautifully penned handwritten letter reads in part:
"Had we gone down in the Channel - our story would never have been told. How many times must this have happened to other crews, sailors and soldiers in action. I feel therefore, that it has been awarded for all those who were unable to tell their own stories."
Dame Vera Lynn also types (with an accompanying signed letter), in part:
"Knowing my connections with the Armed Services I am always being asked "Should we still have Remembrance Day?", and I am always surprised that anyone should ask this.
"It is vital that we all remember those who gave their lives for us and what other way than REMEMBRANCE DAY.
"I do wish the children and young people were more involved in this special day. I would like to see in this country what happens in Holland. Every child at some point in their school years places flowers on the graves of our British boys who dies there. In this way they will always remember that special day and what it means."
Also included with this collection is a copy of the Queen's speeches provided for the book. These are unsigned but are presented on official embossed Buckingham Palace paper.
Available for sale for the first time the collection is listed for sale at £4,500 at collectors website Picollecta.com
