News-Antique.com - Apr 10,2013 - Steppenwolf may have coined the term “heavy metal thunder” with its hit song “Born to Be Wild” during the late 1960s, but George Hutcheson and his famous “Stone Age Man” Top Fuel dragster certainly embodied it on the dragstrip. The only driver to tame such notoriously wild rides as Don Green’s “Rat Trap” AA/Fuel Altered and Fling Traylor’s US Turbine 1 dragster, “Hutch” was a top Southern California draw and crowd favorite. In particular, though, with his fearless, all-out driving style and Romanesque plumed racing helmet, Hutcheson stole the show while driving “Stone Age Man” during the peak of the quick but deadly front-engine dragster.
Beginning as Mike Tingly’s “Mistrial” AA/FD, “Stone Age Man” was based on an RCS chassis by Frank Huszar with full Tom Hanna bodywork, beautiful Bill Carter paintwork, and a blown and injected 392 “Hemi.” With Ed Pink power at Las Vegas’ Stardust International Raceway, Hutcheson and “Stone Age Man” won the invitational Top Fuel meet there in 1968 to defeat Rick Ramsey’s “Howard Cam Rattler” with a 7.14 ET at 225.61 mph during the dramatic final-round shootout at night.
Eventually retired in 1971, “Stone Age Man” was loaned to Ventura College in 1972 by Hutcheson, who promised to come back for it “someday” and true to his word, George returned to the college on March 23, 2009 to reclaim his car. Just six months later, it was restored to its former 1968 glory with the effort led by Larry Crossan, Rick Caron, and a team of experts including Bill Carter, who recreated his striking original paintwork with his son Andy. Triumphant post-restoration displays followed in 2010 at the NHRA Wally Parks Motorsports Museum and the California Hot Rod Reunion’s famous “Cacklefest.” Simply stunning in every respect, the “Stone Age Man” legend is now set to continue in the hands of a new owner. In short, its offering at Russo and Steele’s upcoming auction at Newport Beach marks an amazing opportunity to acquire one of the most colorful and storied front-engine Top Fuel dragsters of all time.
