Lot # 23 Fantastic Pair of Nowotny Percussion Target Pistols, numbered ''1'' and ''2'' in gold, .50 cal., 9'' multi-banded swamped barrels, tightly scroll engraved locks, sideplates, hammers, triggerguards and butt caps; finely carved and checkered ebony grips with carved griffin-like figures to both forend tips. Barrels show gold bands at muzzles with gold scrolls, thick platina bands, with two additional gold bands at breech area. ''Nowotny'' is gold inlaid to each side of both pistols. Top of barrels are marked in silver ''G. Laute, Berlin''. Mathis Nowotny, gunmaker from Leitmertz, Bohemia, moved to Vienna in 1838 and opened up a gunmaking shop and becomes an fine arms maker to the Austrian court. Upon his death, his wife sold his business to his brother Johan, whose descendants are still in business in Vienna today. Condition to both is excellent. Barrels show excellent vivid damascene finishes. Retailer addresses have tarnished somewhat and should clean. All gold and platina is crisp and vivid. Stocks with light scuffs and minor scratches and some small fissures commensurate with age. Actions function flawlessly, 24-groove barrels remain in excellent. Est.: $8,000-$12,000/pair. (Antique)
Lot # 72 Model 1863 Spanish Mountain Howitzer, with royal cipher of the Queen of Spain. Purportedly purchased from Spain and used by the South, with only five known extant, one in a Detroit Museum, one in a Salt Lake City Museum, one in a Virginia Museum, and only this and one other in private hands. Carriage is newly made from measurements taken from the example in the Detroit Museum. Tube measures 38-1/2'' in length; six-groove rifled bore measures 3-3/8'' from land to land. Carriage is 42'' wide, wheels being 37'' in dia. Overall length of carriage and tube is 73''. Carriage is excellent as mfg'd in the last 50 years. Bronze tube with beautiful greenish gray patina, with light just general nicks and scuffs. Est.: $18,000-$24,000.
Lot # 104 Prime 7th Cavalry Range Ainsworth Inspected Colt Cavalry Single Action Army Revolver, #5555, .45 Colt cal., 7-1/2'' barrel with correct early single line barrel address, blue and case colored finish, with one-piece matching walnut grips. U.S. markings to left side of frame, two-line/two date patent markings, beveled cylinder front, earliest mainspring without roller channel, correct 2nd type sear and bolt spring; frame and loading gate with three-digit (599) assembly numbers; barrel numbered 5555 beneath ejector rod, as is cylinder behind flutes; rear grip channel pencil marked 5555. Triggerguard and cylinder with Ainsworth ''A'' inspection mark. In Kopec's book ''Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers, A Continuing Study'', Chapter 27, titled Colt Revolvers for the 7th Cavalry, Table II-VIII (page 252), under 'Prime Serial Number Range', lists 168 pistols between serial numbers 5505-6516 issued to Co. B and Co. I, Sept. 3, 1874. Condition is very good. Barrel and cylinder
