Three major estate sales planned for November by Philip Weiss Auctions Philip Weiss Auctions will conduct a two-day auction event on non-consecutive days – Nov. 15 and 17 – then conclude the month with an important estate sale on Thursday, Nov. 29, all in Oceanside, N.Y.
a Walter Schnauckenber portfolio, William Angus’s Seats of Nobility and Gentry in Great Britain and Wales, and Agnes Strickland’s Lives of the Queens of England (limited edition, 16 volumes).
Other books will include signed Langston Hughes editions, Louis Lamour’s Smoke From His Altar (signed first edition), a manuscript of Brazilian Missions 1789 and more. Autographs will include 19th and 20th century literary and historic figures such as James A. Garfield, Ernest Hemingway, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt and the aforementioned Lee Harvey Oswald.
Posters will feature a great selection of World Wars I and II military and propaganda posters and broadsides. The extremely rare World War I Navy recruiting poster is actually circa 1890s and is an impressive seven feet long. Also offered will be two Atlantic City advertising posters by Eggleston. Magazines will feature one lot consisting of a complete run of Visionaire.
Circus items will include a library of more than 1,000 circus books, with many early and signed editions (to include Clyde Beatty, Frank Buck, Merle Evans and more), an outstanding collection of English and American circus token coins, a letter signed by P.T. Barnum, a red velvet headpiece from the Slivers Madison elephant “Bertha,” a semi-nude 19th century circus wagon carving, a gold-headed presentation cane given by a circus midget troupe to its leader, photographs, programs, prints, newspaper advertisements, and 19th century circus broadsides.
The centerpiece of the militaria category will be one of the most important Naval pieces Philip Weiss Auctions has ever handled: a carved scrimshaw presentation horn (dated 1813) for Commodore O.H. Perry and his men, in honor of their victory over the British Navy on Lake Erie. Also sold will be 19th and 20th century swords, bayonets, weapons, medals and cannonballs.
Other top lots from Nov. 17 will include a fabulous John J. Audubon taxidermy bird collection in a display case, a wonderful Matthew Brady photographic archive, items belonging to songwriter Cole Porter, a collection of Sinsabaugh photos, a political buttons collection, a rare 19th century fire house lantern, and an archive of boxing material with a connection to Joe Louis.
