Another jewel of the Arts and Crafts period from the Munsell collection is a Saturday Evening Girls Pottery Childs Set, comprised of a yellow ground plate, bowl and pitcher bearing ‘The House that Jack Built’ inscriptions and decoration, which is estimated at $4,000-6,000.
Silver highlights include an early 20th century Japanese Export Silver Dragon Box, created by Arthur & Bond of Yokohama, bearing a presale estimate of $5,000-7,000. Arthur & Bond, a fine art gallery and dealer in “high class curios” was located at 38 Water Street, Yokohama, Japan and catered mainly to English expatriates and foreign travelers. Arthur & Bond’s silversmiths became famous for creating the Liscum Bowl, one of the largest sterling silver objects ever made. Made in 1900 as a monument to Colonel Liscom of the 9th United States Infantry who was killed in action, the bowl weighs 90 lbs., measures 40 inches across and has a capacity of 14 gallons. The Liscum Bowl is now located at the 2nd Infantry Division Museum, at Camp Red Cloud, Korea.
Jewelry and Objets d’ Vertu offerings include a Louis XVI Oval Gold and Enamel Snuff Box, estimated at $2,000-3,000 and a Louis XVI Gold and Hardstone Gourd form Snuff Box, estimated at $800-1,200, both from a prominent Prout’s Neck, Maine estate. A collection of Native American Silver and Turquoise bracelets, belt buckles and Bolos is also featured, as well as several Rolex watches.
The auction will conclude with a selection of over 100 Oriental Rugs and Carpets from various estates and collections. One of the featured rugs is a late 19th century Lavar Kirman Carpet, once owned by the Brigadeer General and Mrs. William Carey Crane of Leesburgh, Virginia. The 17 foot 4 inch x 13 foot 4 inch rug bears a pre-sale auction estimate of $5,000-7,000.
The exhibition is open to the public and begins on Thursday, September 27th. Hours: Thursday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 12 noon.
