Collection of Jazz Photographs will be sold Sept. 14 at WeissAuctions.com The Burt Goldblatt Collection of Jazz Photographs part one will be sold Sept. 14 at WeissAuctions.com. Burt was the “Ansel Adams of Jazz” photography, capturing iconic images of the great musicians.
Miles Davis, Billy Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk and many more greats highlighting the evolution of jazz from the 1930s through the 1980s were photographed by insider Burt Goldblatt, who created iconic album covers, shot publicity stills and art photography of the greats in the 1950s-1960s.
African American musicians made Jazz an American original musical art form, and people who collect Jazz, Black Americana and African American history will find this collection compelling, artful and insightful. Iconic images of the great performers on stage, back stage and in repose, this is a look inside their world as the music evolved.
From the Newport Jazz Festivals in the 1950s and 1960s through recording sessions and small club gigs, these photos represent the greatest images of the era. Included in this collection are Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Hot Lips Page, Cab Calloway, Cecil Payne, Buck Clayton, Jimmy Rushing, Joe Williams, Cannonball & Nat Adderly, Roy Eldridge, Sidney Bechet, Charles Mingus, Mezz Mezrow, Chick Webb, JJ Johnson, Mamie Smith, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Billy Eckstein, Lionel Hampton, Fats Waller and many others.
There are many Caucasian Jazz musicians represented also including Jelly Roll Morton, Stan Getz, Buddy Rich, Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims and numerous others who were hip and part of the scene.
Burt’s collection also includes photographs by other greats, promotional photos and vintage candid photos of the early days of Jazz in the 1930s and 1940s. The collection has been lotted up in groups including singers, guitarists, drummers, pianists, sax, trombone and trumpet players. These are mostly original prints, with varying conditions of each photo, so look through the images online or see them in person at Weiss Auction Gallery.
Also included in the auction will be Newport Jazz Festival Programs from the 1950s through the 1970s, autographed 1948 concert programs by Dizzy Gillespie and Illinois Jaquet along with an original 1947 concert program of Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.
