News-Antique.com - Jul 30,2012 - (INA, Ill.) – The single-owner lifetime collection of William “Bill” Dagg – a man who has accumulated thousands of items, mostly petroliana, toys, country store, farm and advertising memorabilia – will be sold the weekend of Sept. 14-16 by Matthews Auctions, LLC, based in Nokomis, Ill. The auction will be held at the facilities of the Southern Illinois Auction Company.
“Normally we feature several large estates or collections per sale, plus other individual items, but the Bill Dagg collection is so huge in size and scope there’s no way it could share the stage with anything else,” said Dan Matthews of Matthews Auctions, LLC. “All three days will be packed, plus we’ll have separate rings on Saturday and Sunday. It will be a spectacular sale.”
The toys in the sale will be sold on Sunday, Sept. 16. Offered will be a die-cast Corgi Batman rocket-firing Batmobile, new in the box and in great condition, rated 9.5 out of 10 (with the box rated 7.5), complete with nine rockets in the original paper bag (opened); and a pressed steel Structo True Value semi-truck and trailer, new in the box, rated 9.75, 21 inches in length.
A pair of toy soda delivery trucks should wow the crowd. One is a Japanese battery-op tin litho Coca-Cola delivery truck made by the Sanyo Company, new in the box and rated 9 (the box is rated 5 with some wear), 12 ½ inches long, in good working order; and a Marx Pepsi-Cola delivery truck, plastic, 10 ½ inches long, rated 9, in good condition and with nine cases of Pepsi.
Mr. Dagg is a resident of Wayne City, Ill., a town not far away from the auction itself, in southern Illinois. He has been a dedicated collector since he was a teenager. His current position in the furniture industry has allowed him to indulge his collections over the years. But he feels the time has come for him to share what he’s accumulated with other, like-minded collectors.
Mr. Matthews said by the time the final gavel comes down on Sunday, Sept. 16, as many as 5,000 items will have changed hands. For people unable to attend the event in person, Internet bidding will be facilitated by Proxibid.com, and phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. Ina is located in southern Illinois, about 50 miles southeast of St. Louis and near I-57 and I-64.
The action will kick off on Friday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m. (CST), with a session dedicated to coffee cans, cereal boxes and containers, tobacco tins, signs and advertising, beer and soda cans, quart oil cans and handy oiler – over 400 lots in all. A day-long preview will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Previews for the Saturday and Sunday sessions will be held from 8-9 a.m. on both days.
