A wide-ranging collection of items from estates across Fairfield County will include some of the most unusual consignments of the season. Preview begins Thursday, July 12th and runs 11am to 4pm each day through Saturday, July 14th. The gallery opens at 9am on auction day with the sale commencing at 11am.
A strong selection of fine art includes works by Americans Eric Sloane (3), Herman Dudley Murphy, William Hallstall, Paul Sample, R.A. Fox, Leon Kroll, Leonard Ochtman, John Lavalle, Dorothy Brett, John Marin, Vern Broe and Violet Oakley.
Leading a group of European art is a large oil by Guiseppi Migneco, estimated $10,000/$15,000 that depicts a field worker getting a drink of water. Also selling are works by Carolus Pallya, Marie Laurencin, Paul Emile Pissarro, Suzanne Eisendieck, Yvonne Canu (2), Elisee Maclet (2) Edward Roworth, Bernard Lorjou and two still life paintings attributed to J.M. Picart. A fine Russian bronze by Albert Moritz Wolf titled “The Kiss” will also be sold.
Modernism is well represented. A selection of furniture includes several designs by Bruno Mathsson as well as a lounge by Yngve Ekstrom. Picasso/Madoura ceramics include a 10” pitcher and two plates. Artist signed prints by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Motherwell as well as a woodblock by Tomio Kinoshita will all be sold. Of special interest is a mobile by Oswaldo Guayasamin.
Among the more unusual items being sold are an early bi-polar Edison fan circa 1898, which ran off batteries and a Jimmi Hendrix “Summerthing” concert poster from 1969. Found sitting at the base of the stoop of a modest Bridgeport house is a pair of life-size marble lions dating to the late 19th century, estimated $5,000/$7,500.
Americana includes a figured maple bow front chest, a classical giltwood convex mirror and a 19th century ship portrait of a four-masted ship.
Stored away by a local family for over twenty years is a massive pair of Victorian figural oak carved pilasters. One depicts Mars, the Roman god of war, holding a shield and axe. The other depicts Minerva holding a cornucopia. Each measures seven feet high and weighs in at over 150 pounds.
A small selection of Native American art includes a choice pair of Sioux quilled and beaded moccasins, a pair of good Sioux possible bags and a large feather pattern blackware bowl by Maria Martinez.
A good selection of Chinese art includes a porcelain plaque by Yu Wenxiang (1910-1993), the senior master at Zhushan, estimated at $20,000/$30,000 and a six scroll mural by David Kwo depicting an extensive landscape with flora, 5’8” high by 18’ long.
Other items of interest include an English tall clock with penwork case by James Lawley of Bristol, a French Empire Skeleton clock with blue enameling, Handel and Pairpoint lamps, a hoard of period Piranesi architectural engravings, Homann maps of North America, rare coins including several high-grade double eagles and a near complete run of Morgan dollars including the rare
