THE ANNUAL FLAGSTAFF ANTIQUE SUMMER SHOWCASE
ANTIQUE COLLECTING … GONE TO THE DOGS?
The love of dogs goes back as far as 12,000 years ago when the first evidence of a domesticated dog was found in a cave in Iraq.
Later, images of Egyptian paintings, Assyrian sculptures and Roman mosaics revealed many different types of dogs being used for many different purposes from hunting, herding and guard dogs to using a dogs warmth to cure stomach aches…the creation of the lap dog!
Whatever the reason, humans have always been in love with the dog. So much so, many of them hired professional photographers to take photos of their beloved pet and then had those images transferred specialty items like jewelry, serving trays, photo albums, wall tapestry and more.
Collecting dog-related items has become increasingly popular during the past 10 years or so and the possibilities are endless. Interior designers and homeowners alike, search for these special and unique collectibles often.
To see many of these faithful companions up close, visit the upcoming Flagstaff Summer Antique Showcase July 13, 14, 15, 2012. On display and for sale will be a collection of much sought-after serving trays depicting a variety of dog portraits. Made of wood, tin and paper machete, these dog trays are used in the decorating of homes today and hold a special place in a dog-owners heart.
You’ll also want to check out the fabulous collection of inkwells too! Bronze figurals from the early 1850's to 1900's. Most people had their own ink wells and they chose them in accordance to the their individual interest. And as with the serving trays, many ink wells were made of dog figurals. Some even included watch holders and pen wipes made of horsehair that cleaned the tips of the pens.
