A new aesthetic called Art Nouveau influenced the decorative arts, architecture and fashion at the end of the 1800s and just a decade beyond until 1910. The “new art” brought design innovation that wasn’t derived from any previous art form or period style. It stressed curvilinear, undulating, botanical lines. It stressed design and hand fabrication over precious materials and eschewed machine production entirely.
Lily-of-the-valley was the very essence of art nouveau style, with its tapering leaves, arched stems and delicate, trembling bell flowers. In the Sweet Romance collection, the glass pearl flowers are attached ‘en tremblant’ which heightens their appeal.
