A beautifully carved ivory icon of St. John the Evangelist was sold at Freeman's on January 25th. The icon, which depicts St. John with a scribe, an eagle peering over his shoulder, and a sky composed of intricately carved floral scrolls, brought on a bidding war and caused the final price to climb well over its high estimate of $1,500. When the hammer came down, the icon sold for $12,800 (including buyers premium).
