An 8.5 graded copy of Archie Comics #1, published in 1942, sold for $167,300 at a Heritage Auctions sale in February 2011, setting a new world record for an Archie comic book.
9) Action Comics #13 - $185,000
A 9.2 graded copy of Action Comics #13, published in June 1939, realised $185,000 at a ComicConnect sale in August 2011.
The edition, which features Superman holding back a train on the front cover, was the fourth appearance of the Caped Crusader.
8) Jerry Robinson Detective Comics #67 cover artwork - $239,000
The original Jerry Robinson cover artwork for Detective Comics #67 made $239,000 at a Heritage auction in November 2011.
It features Batman and Robin in hot pursuit of arch-enemy the Penguin.
Robinson, who died in December 2011, is regarded by many as the creator of Batman.
7) The Avengers #1 - $250,000
The Avengers #1, published in September 1963, sold at Metropolis/ComicConnect for $250,000 in November 2011.
It was a world record price for a copy of Avengers #1.

In August 2011, an Action Comics #10 sold for $258,000 at ComicConnect, a record for an Action Comics #10.
The 9.0 graded copy, published in March 1939, features the third appearance of Superman.

Amazing Fantasy #15 from 1961 features the introduction of Spider-Man.
A 9.4 graded copy of the comic book realised $325,000 at a ComicConnect auction in September 2011.

Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's original splash page (where an entire page is taken up with a single picture) for Batman: The Dark Knight #3, made $448,125 at Heritage Auctions in May 2011, setting a new record for a piece of original art for a US comic book.1
2) Amazing Fantasy #15 - $1.1m
A 9.6 graded copy of the comic book was sold by ComicConnect in March 2011 for $1.1m, trumping the $325,000 achieved for a 9.4 graded copy later in the year.
1) Action Comics #1 - $2.16m
A 9.0 graded copy of Action Comics #1 made a comic book world record price of $2.16m at a ComicConnect auction in November 2011.
The copy was owned by actor Nicolas Cage when it was stolen from his home in 2000.
It was discovered in a Californian storage locker in April 2011.
It is not known whether Cage was still the owner when the comic book was sold.
