“The most elegant American Classic ever created” were the words used to describe the 1931 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Coupe, and few collectors world argue.
Built for Captain George Whittell Jr, Duesenberg’s best-ever customer, this stunning pre-war masterpiece of Art Deco design became the most expensive American car in history when it sold at the Gooding & Co Pebble Beach sale for a World record price of $10,340,000.
1) 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa - $16,390,000
The most expensive car of 2011, and the most expensive ever sold at a public auction, is the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype. One of just two factory Classiche-certified Testa Rossas in existence, the car has a race history featuring every major worldwide event.
Described by Gooding & Co founder David Gooding as “one of the greatest race cars of all time”, the Ferrari made history at the company’s Pebble Beach auction in August when it sold for a World record price of $16,390,000.
