Described as one of “the most beautiful automobiles ever conceived”, this Talbot-Lago T150-C SS Teardrop Coupé was a triple-winner at Pebble Beach in 2009 and was awarded Best of Show at Meadow Brook in 2010.
It sold at the RM Auctions Villa d'Este sale in Italy in May 2011 for a price of €3,136,000 ($4,036,350).
9) 1952 Ferrari 340 Mexico Coupe - $4,290,000
This stunning Ferrari was the most successful of the 1952 Panamericana Ferrari team cars, and has an exceptional history and provenance. Beautifully preserved and still retaining its original engine, the car sold at the RM Auctions Amelia Island sale in March 2011 for a price of $4,290,000.

One of just ten 375 MM Berlinettas ever built, this matching-numbers automobile had been perfectly restored by its owner and documented by the renowned historian Marcel Massini.
It was offered at the RM Auctions Villa d'Este sale in May 2011, where is brought an impressive €3,360,000 ($4,324,660).
7) 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout - $4,620,000
Not only is this car the oldest on the list, it’s the oldest working car in the world! The De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout was built in 1884, and has been described as "one of the most important motor cars in the world".
It sold at the RM Auctions Hershey Lodge event in Pennsylvania in October 2011 for a World record price of $4.62 million, making it the most expensive antique automobile ever sold.
6) 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster - $4,620,000, August
Only 25 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadsters were ever built – and two of them were sold at the RM Auctions Monterey sale in August 2011.
The first on our list is this black 1939 example, formerly of the celebrated Lyon Collection. It exceeded its estimate to sell for a price of $4,620,000.

The second Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster to appear on the list, a silver 1937 model with coachwork by Sindelfingen was described as “automotive artwork at its finest”.
Owned and restored by two of the world’s most renowned collectors, the multi award-winning car sold at the RM Auctions Monterey sale in August 2011
