Lyon & Turnbull, one of the United Kingdom’s premiere auction houses, has an international reputation for providing bidders with exquisite items. The auction on January 11th will be no different. It features an extensive collection of rare books from various authors, topics and countries. Treasures are sure to be found in this catalogue of books, maps, and manuscripts. A third edition (19th century) of John Guillim’s A Display of Heraldrie, originally published in 1638, is an exciting item on Lot 42. It was frequently consulted in both America and England for heraldic engravings on silver plates and is a must have for those dealing in heraldry. More on heraldry is included in Lot 186 with two volumes of Alexander Nisbet’s A System of Heraldry, 1722-42. Robert Ackerman’s Repository of the Arts, Literature, and Commerce, a famous reference work in the history of British and American styles of the Regency and early Classic tastes, is both a historically important and practical book for any literary scholar.
Several volumes of Benjamin Rush’s Medical Inquiries and Observations, all printed in the 18th century, are available. Rush, Philadelphia’s most famous doctor during the 18th century, won the respect of the public and the admiration of the innumerable doctors who studied under his tutelage as a physician at Pennsylvania Hospital. These books provide marvelous insight into his practice and scientific mind. Other rare and important medical books at this auction include works by famous anatomist Andreas Versalius, radical practitioner Paraclesus and innovative Dutch microscopic investigator Anthony van Leeuwenhoek. In addition to rare books, Lyon & Turnbull will have rare antique maps available. Herman Holl’s Atlas Minor, published in 1732, is sure to attract a large number of bidders. This edition comes complete with an engraved title and 62 uncolored folding and double-paged maps. The historic and culturally important work has a starting bid of £2,250.
