Dedham, MA — On Sunday 11 December 2011 at 12:00 PM EST, Grogan & Company will host its December Auction. The sale will take place at 22 Harris Street in Dedham, MA as well as online in real time through Artfact LLC of Boston, MA. Bidding will begin at 12:00 PM, EST in Dedham and online at artfact.com on Sunday 11 December. Previews are available on location beginning December 8. The December Auction features an exciting collection of Asian arts, ceramics, bronzes, furniture and other arts as well as American paintings and Grogan’s always-excellent selection of Oriental rugs and carpets. Most intriguing about this auction is the early Chinese furniture that comes from the J. Malcolm Swenson Collection of Hanover, New Hampshire. Swenson developed a keen interest in Chinese culture and design in the 1970s when serving as an advisor to the Chinese Government and during his work in Beijing. A highlight from the Swenson collection is a 17th century Huanghuali side table. As a classic article of period furniture, it would look well in almost any setting, traditional or modern. Impossible to overlook in this collection is a pair of high yoke-backed 17th century Huanghuali armchairs. From around the same time period is a pair of Huanghuali stools with woven seats, impressive and very modern-looking in terms of design. Also to be auctioned is a 19th century Chinese Nine-Dragon silk embroidered robe. It would make a stunning display piece on a stand beside some of the early Chinese furniture in this auction.
This auction also offers an impressive selection of paintings. Of particular interest is an oil painting by Guy Wiggins, Image of Old Trinity Winter (Wall Street), which depicts the Sub Treasury Building. This is a classic urban snowscape for which Wiggins was famous. His impressionistic treatment of snow falling creates an appealing mood for the view of landmark buildings in New York City. Another exceptional painting to be auctioned is Charles Frederick Naegele’s Portrait of a Lady in a White Dress.
