Hixson (Chattanooga), TN — On Saturday 3 December 2011 at 11:00 AM EST, Northgate Gallery will host its Monumental Estate Auction. The sale will take place at 5520 Highway 153 in Hixson, TN, as well as online in real time through Artfact LLC of Boston, MA. Bidding will begin at 11:00 AM, EST in Hixson and online at artfact.com on Saturday 3 December. There will be a special preview showing on December 2 from 9 AM to 9 PM. Northgate Gallery is one of the oldest auction houses in Tennessee, a fertile region for the discovery of valuable antiques. The December 3 sale is not one to be overlooked. The auction offers a great variety of fine furniture, jewelry, porcelain, paintings, rugs, sculptures, and more. Of special significance is a painting by Jasper Francis Cropsey. This handsome original oil painting, called The Roman Campagna, is signed “J. F. Cropsey, 1875” and comes with provenance. It is an impressive work by an artist who was a first-generation member of the Hudson River School. Also in the painting collection is a copy of a portrait of a woman by Titian. Another highlight is a bronze mounted French marble mantle clock with a bronze sculpture of a lady with a harp. No doubt the sculpture represents the ancient Greek poet Sappho. This sale features excellent, rare examples of American furniture, such as a nicely grained pine blanket chest fitted with a glove box and three small drawers, and a cherry bureau bookcase with mullion glass doors and good fitted interior.
