Eldred’s is renowned for its auctions of Asian art. This extraordinary two-day auction offers a vast variety of beautiful jades, porcelain, snuff bottles, paintings, enamel, ivory sculpture, and more. The range and quality of Asian art available is not to be missed! There are many opportunities for handsome and unusual gifts for the holiday season as well as additions to personal collections.
Superb skill and artistry are to be found in every item, such as a green jade snuff bottle in rectangular form and an interior-painted agate snuff bottle in ovoid form with a remarkable prowling tiger design. An ivory snuff bottle in grape form with intricate relief-carved flowers, insects, and vines is another example of magnificent workmanship. This auction offers a stunning collection of jades, the star of which is perhaps a white jade table screen carved in fan form with extensive figural landscape design. It is mounted in a pierced wood screen. The ivory collection is equally impressive. A highlight is a Shibayama-inlaid ivory figure of a woman holding an umbrella from the Meiji Period. Also to be auctioned are several pottery bowls from the Sung Dynasty, representing Chinese pottery made at a time when true porcelain was at the brink of discovery, about a thousand years ago. Purity of form is their essence. A standout from the Day 2 sale is a K’ossu Nine-Dragon robe with gold threadwork dragons on a yellow ground spotted with bats and peaches. The workmanship of this fabulous robe speaks for itself, making it a radiant display piece for any setting!
