When the Charity Shield was first introduced in England in 1908, it pitted the winners of the professional Football League with those of the amateur Southern league.
This excellent condition Chelsea programme details the match between Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers on April 27, 1908 at Stamford Bridge. It sold for £10,800 at Christieís in May 2005.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Football League champions United prevailed in a replay some four months later.
