The ‘Travolta Dress’ is a dark blue Victor Edelstein gown that Princess Diana wore during her famous dance with John Travolta at a White House event hosted by Ronald Reagan in 1985.
The dress was sold by Waddington’s auctioneers in Canada for $800,000 in 2011.
2) State Tour of India, 1992 lilac dress - $350,000
During her 1992 State Tour of India, Diana wore a long, lilac wild silk gown embroidered with flowers, with a matching bolero jacket.
The long sleeved gown, designed by Catherine Walker, was described as being “in perfect keeping with India’s cultural standards”.
It was sold by Waddington’s in 2011 for $350,000.
3) First official Royal appearance dress - £192,000
The black, off the shoulder, low cut dress worn by Diana on her first official appearance with her new fiancé, Prince Charles, was sold by Kerry Taylor Auctions for £192,000 in 2010. The dress was bought by a fashion museum in Chile.
The Emanuel dress was not greeted favourably by Prince Charles according to Kerry Taylor Auctions, who note that, upon seeing Diana in the dress, Charles told her that only people in mourning wore black.
4) Mario Testina Vanity Fair dress - $257,000
A cream coloured silk crepe dress worn by Diana was sold by Waddington’s in 2011 for $257,000.
The dress was worn by Diana in the famous photo shoot by Mario Testina for Vanity Fair.
It was originally designed for Diana to wear at a Royal banquet for the King and Queen of Malaysia in 1993.
5) Steel Magnolia’s premiere dress - $216,000
This long, burgundy strapless velvet dinner dress was worn by Diana during the film premiere of Steel Magnolias in 1990 and during her state visit to Korea in 1992.
Designed by Catherine Walker, the dress was worn with a Bouton Renaud velvet tailcoat embroidered with flowers and leaves.
The dress and jacket sold for $216,000 at Waddington’s in 2011.
6) Palace de Versailles, 1994 dress - $216,000
A black halter-neck, silk crepe dress worn by Diana to the Palace de Versailles for “La Deuxieme Nuit International de L’enfrance”, organised by UNESCO in 1994, was sold by Waddington’s for $216,000 in 2011.
The dress was designed by Catherine Walker and was trimmed at the neckline, and one hip, with black round and bugle beads.
This dress was also worn by Diana for the now world famous photo shoot by Mario Testino in a 1997 issue of Vanity Fair.
7) Beaded Vanity Fair dress - $195,000
During her photo shoot with Mario Testino for Vanity Fair in 1997, Diana wore a Catherine Walker grey silk crepe evening dress which was embroidered with pearls and sequins.
The dress, which featured a long sarong sytle skirt, sold for £195,000.
