Family Jewels Established for 26 years, wholesale and retail pricing for sterling silver, gold, dolls, and other collectibles. Established in 1985, owner operated small US business!
News-Antique.com - Jul 12,2011 - Since 1985, Lisa Cohen has been the owner, operator, buyer, seller, and chief bottle washer of the Family Jewels antiques shop. Starting out with flea markets and antique stores, Lisa quickly opened up a bricks and mortar shop in the metro Atlanta suburb of Decatur, Ga. In these pre-internet days, Lisa enjoyed the long hours in her shop as well as the early morning hunts through garage sales and flea markets all around the southeast United States and eventually traveling throughout Europe for more unique and interesting items. The year 2000 marked not just the beginning of a new millenium; it was the year that Lisa decided to be part of the "bricks to clicks" shift and move her shop online. More than the current trend at the time, as a single mother to a then 10-year-old, Lisa's main motive behind closing her quaint downtown Decatur shop was to be both a working AND a stay-at-home mom.
The past 26 years or so has seen many changes in the collectibles and overall economic market. Ebbs and flows, ups and downs, finding out what is "hot" and what is "not"...Lisa has been able to ride the waves the entire time. While Lisa's passions in life have broadened from antique dealer to include being a buys yoga teacher and her finishing her studies as a holistic nutritionist, her love for antiques, especially vintage jewelry and small collectibles and accessories, has never faded.
The current economic challenges for so many have definitely changed the market. From eBay to bricks and mortar shops to online antique malls and stores, one thing Lisa has noticed is that overall, fine quality vintage collectibles remain one of the more sound investments once can make. The current trend, in such uncertain times, seems to be in precious and semi-precious materials. Amber, diamonds, various gemstones, gold and silver have proven to be more of a wise investment than many retirement funds, stocks and mutual funds. However, money aside, Lisa feels quite strongly that ultimately, a collector will always do well to buy items they love. Like art, a strand of antique amber beads, a sterling silver necklace or tea set, a gold charm, or an antique mesh purse, is always a good risk if you love it.
So, Lisa's been taking more time to continue to add plenty of fun and investment quality items to her online antiques shop, The Family Jewels, as well as to launch about 50 auctions a month. Right now, she has lovely sterling silver jewelry and collectibles, as well as wonderful amber, gold charms, toys, dolls, and other unique and unusual items. With gold and silver bringing top dollar in these times, much of her pieces are at or slightly above scrap value, making them even more of a wise investment than ever before.
