Word Record prices set in ‘greatest stamp auction of its generation’ Spink’s auction of the Chartwell Collection includes the highest price ever paid for a stamp at auction in the UK
News-Antique.com - Jun 28,2011 - Spink’s London sale of the legendary Chartwell Collection is running between June 28-29. Today’s highlights so far have included no less than two World Record prices.
Record price: ‘the World’s Most Famous stamp’ (£1.08m ($1.7m))
Aka the Chartwell Mauritius 'Post Office' 2d blue, what many call “the World’s Most Famous stamp” brought approximately £1.08m ($1.7m) including buyer's premium.
The price is a record for a stamp sold at auction in the United Kingdom.
The Chartwell Mauritius 'Post Office' 2d blue is probably the most beautifully preserved example of its kind. What’s more, it was estimated at just £400,000-500,000.
World Record #2: most valuable British Virgin Islands stamp ever auctioned (£144,000 ($229,778))
Originally, the one shilling, black and rose carmine stamp was supposed to feature the figure of the Virgin Mary facing outwards - yet she is mysteriously missing from this example.
This is the finest known example of the stamp, even better than the one which is in the Royal Philatelic Collection. Over its £80,000 top estimate, the stamp brought £144,000 ($229,778).
Both stamps were purchased by an anonymous telephone bidder.
