of recommendation for his envoy, Anne's father Thomas Boleyn, to the Bishop of Ravenna.
Henry hoped that Thomas would represent him in discussions with Holy Roman Emperor Charles V regarding the possible annulment. But Charles was unmoved. Henry's recourse was to break from Rome and establish the Church of England... and the rest is, of course, notorious history.
Amazingly this letter, which features a clear, bold signature, is available on the private markets and priced at £275,000.
