News-Antique.com - Jun 16,2011 - Santa Monica, CA – Santa Monica Auctions will conduct its annual public summer sale of modern & contemporary art , this weekend (June 18-19th) at the Bergamot Station Arts Center. Featuring over 200 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures, this 2-day auction offers a number of not-to-be-missed lots that are available for viewing now at auctionzip.com/live.
The highlights include several Andy Warhol silkscreen prints from 1966-1986, including well-known pieces such as Campbell’s Tomato Soup Bag and Annie Oakley, as well as two installations by Larry Bell, whose artworks are found in the collections of over 50 museums worldwide. His Chairs in Space #2, estimated to reach $70,000, is a mixed media piece that, like many of his other works, seeks to stimulate perceptual viewer’s experience.
The centerpiece of this sale is the gelatin silver print of Richard Avedon’s photograph of a leather-clad Andy Warhol, a raw portrait of the artist that illuminated his scarred torso, the result of Valerie Solana’s murder attempt in 1968. Richard Avedon was one of the greatest portrait photographers in the 20th century, capturing the personality and essence of his subjects, which ranged from blue collar workers of the American west, participants of the Civil Rights Movement, protesters of the Vietnam War, to famous celebrities and artists such as The Beatles, Audrey Hepburn, and Pablo Picasso.
This auction will also offer a lyrical abstract green acrylic painting entitled Intimate Lighting (Soliloquy for D. H.) by Robert Natkin as well as several artworks, including an oil on canvas nightscape, by Peter Alexander, a local of Santa Monica with works featuring in museums throughout the United States.
