This show follows an unprecedented surge of world wide press which can only be explained by the timely message her work represents about standards of beauty and current culture mores… what it accepts and what it embraces.
Jacobs is known for ornate sculptural pieces, alive with color and bejewel-ment, yet buried within the ornamentation is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the limits to which we allow fashion and our ideas of “beauty” to shape our bodies and minds. Her work explores the extent to which we let fashion take us, our desire to be desired. The advancement of feminism has been countered by society’s pursuit of physical perfection and Jacobs work has hit a cord on this surreal circus-like atmosphere in which we now find ourselves.
Despite the underlying commentary, Jacobs’ works are objects of beauty. Her one-of-a-kind creations are made in part from woman’s garments and accessories, both thought by the artist to be restrictive and sometimes preposterous. She makes a statement with her art that is beautiful, thought provoking and sometimes unsettling.
To quote Robert C. Morgan Phd. & art critic,
“ Laura Ann Jacobs is a serious artist who gives her work intelligence on all levels---form, technique, and content. To this, she adds a dose of humor and a quality of lightness that allows us to open the doors of repression and laugh, shout, or moan, whatever or however we choose to respond.
The exhibition will continue to June 7, 2011. Gallery Hours are:
Mon-Fri 10 am- 5 PM and Sat by appointment.
