Dr. Rankin, a well-known and respected physician in Ellerbe, NC, was also a passionate collector of artifacts and enjoyed history, archeology, paleontology and anthropology. He spent his free time traveling the world in search of Native American artifacts, pre-historic fossils and exotic wildlife and waterfowl decoys.
In 1984, Dr. Rankin founded the Rankin Museum of American Heritage in Ellerbe, where he served as a member of the museum’s board of directors and also participated actively in the daily affairs of the museum. The museum houses a vast collection of 19th century pottery and Civil War relics, as well as Native American artifacts, some which date back 14,000 years.
Items crossing the block during this live auction webcast include American Indian artifacts including thousands of arrowheads, spearpoints, tools, beads, wood scrapers, gorget, pottery, trade axes, game stones, bird stones and more.
“Dr. Rankin was a true friend of the auction industry, having bought and sold many acres of real property and personal property through the auction method of marketing,” said auctioneer Will Lilly of Iron Horse Auction Co. “It is an honor and privilege to be able to share with the world of his many lifetime accomplishments and experiences.”
