Corning Ware has an interesting history, it is made of a special mixture of glass and ceramic called Pyroceram. Corning Ware has become a hot collectible as it is considered a "Green" cookware, it durable and the original formulation is no longer available. This formulation was discovered in the early 1950's when the government asked Corning to formulate a material for the tips of missiles that could withstand extreme temperature changes, in 1958 the first pieces of Corning Ware were introduced with the Cornflower Blue pattern, it was an instant hit and was followed by many other patterns in a variety of pieces.
The biggest reason for Corning Ware's success was with post war homemakers who loved the fact that it could be taken from freezer to refrigerator to oven to table, and although they did not have microwave ovens at this time it has continued to be a favorite today because it is also microwave safe. It has also become very popular as a Green cookware as it does not contain harmful chemicals found in newer cookware, with a variety of lids and covers there is no need to use foils or plastic wrap when storing leftovers. Several years ago Corning Ware was purchased by a Chinese company, they continued making Corning Ware and sold the many pieces of already made stock in the warehouse but discontinued production shortly thereafter. In 2009 they reintroduced some pieces in the Cornflower Blue pattern but have changed the material these pieces are made of, these newer pieces are not made of Pyroceram and many of the new pieces are now made in China. French White was another popular pattern that was originally made in Pyroceram, it was only produced for a few years, this is another one of the patterns that is currently being produced, however, it is now made of stoneware and is Made in China.
