The survey question was "What is the primary source of the antiques & collectibles you purchase for your personal collection?" Here are the results in order of popularity with collectors.
Based on these results it looks like most collectors who completed the survey were driven by not only the desire to find something for their collection, but the desire to find a bargain. Comments from respondents mentioned that they want to find valuable items before their prices are marked up to retail. However, several people also mentioned that if they found a piece that they "must have" for their collection, they were willing to pay retail for it.
