News-Antique.com - Sep 29,2010 - Never before seen in public, Paul Fraser Collectibles are delighted to be handling the sale of The Churchill Collection.
This unique collection comprises a partial set of solid cast gold upper dentures.
The gold dentures are of particular note as only four such sets are known to exist. One set is believed to have been buried with Sir Winston, a second set is held by the Royal College of Surgeons in London.
The third set of dentures recently sold at auction for £17,480, however that set was a spare set that had never been worn by Sir Winston.
The set of dentures included in this collection were actually worn by Sir Winston until a clasp broke and they were returned to the dental surgery. The broken clasp is still visible in the photos.
The upper dentures were deliberately designed to be loose-fitting so that Churchill could keep the lisp which made him instantly recognisable during his radio broadcasts.
Also included is a copy of a photograph of Sir Winston Churchill being escorted to his car by Wallace Stewart Ross, his last dentist.
Churchill so valued the skill of his dental team that he nominated his original dentist, Wilfrid Fish, for a Knighthood.
'Wilfrid Fish and a profession in the making' by J D Manson is the definitive book on Mr Fish's career.
The book details Mr Fish's relationship with Mr Stewart Ross, who was considered his best friend and who subsequently became a partner in Fish's Cavendish Square, London and Sevenoaks, Kent practices.
Mr Stewart Ross took over both practices when Mr Fish retired, and was Sir Winston's last dentist.
The collection also includes a note from Churchill's private secretary addressed to Mr Stewart Ross: "Lady Churchill has asked me to send you this photograph which Sir Winston has signed for you."
The signed photograh of Sir Winston is also included in the collection.
As is an appointment card for the Cavendish Square practice on which a hand written note reads "partial gold belonging to Sir Winston Churchill." A second handwritten note reads "Fitted in Sevenoaks before the war and worn by Sir Winston."
Churchill memorabilia of this calibre, and with such impeccable provenance, is exceptionally rare.
