News-Antique.com - Sep 12,2010 - The first thing to know about Tiffin Dolores is that there are two patterns called Dolores and they are very different. The first Dolores pattern is an etched design with a wreath and dangling swags made on the 14179 blank which has a wide base, narrow waist and flared rim. The later cut Dolores pattern is on different stemlines and looks completely unlike the etched design. Tiffin made Dolores cut crystal from 1948 to 1967.
Dolores cut pattern is a great design for blending with china or other glass. The design is a simple line of stylized leaves that curves around the bowl of the goblet. It’s a fresh, pretty cutting that is saved from being too formal because the line of leaves curves up and down on the bowl. We’ve paired Dolores with several patterns of china, depression glass and elegant crystal and it works well with patterns that are not too fussy. The bottom part of the composite picture shows Dolores paired with casual china, Cinnamon from Royal Doulton, and you can see that the cut crystal adds a touch of liveliness and charm to this plain dinnerware.
American styles moved to being more informal with less rigid insistence on using the “right” stem by the time Tiffin made cut Dolores. This shows in the reduced number of stems available. You can find older patterns that included water goblets, multiple wine goblets, cocktails, sherries, parfaits, tall and short sherbets, plus tumblers. The blank is particularly nice, fits in your hand and very easy to hold. The stem is hexagonal with a wider wafer with steps on the top and bottom and the foot is big enough that it’s not tippy. The bowl is a rounded basic shape that goes well with the simple cutting.
Besides the stemware our store has the 8 inch plates. Tiffin meant these for lunch and they will work for that when you want something a little classy. They make even better dessert plates, big enough to hold a slice of pie with rims that will keep the juices in the plate and not on you.
Tiffin Glass started out as Factory R part of U.S. Glass in and stayed in business longer than many companies, finally closing in 1984 They specialized in stemware with some dinnerware pieces (as did other elegant companies like Fostoria) and were known for their beautiful decorations and stylish shapes with the slogan “Tiffin is Forever”. Dolores is a great example of this tradition of fine glassmaking.
