Washington Chief gas sign realizes $20,900 at Matthews Auctions An outstanding 72-inch Washington Chief Gasoline double-sided porcelain sign with full Indian headdress profile for a graphic climbed to $20,900 at an auction held Aug. 6 by Matthews Auctions, LLC.
Gasoline 15-inch single lens in a metal globe body attained $3,850; and an RPM Motor Oil 'A Knockout For Winter' one-sided tin sign with Donald Duck graphic fetched $3,850.
Matthews Auctions, LLC's next big event will be the sale of the Paul Wilson collection of petroliana, automobilia, gas pumps and vintage toys, to be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at 13002 Kentucky Rd. in Independence, Mo., beginning at 10 a.m. (CST). Offered will be hundreds of lots of petroliana (neon, porcelain and metal signs, globes, gas pumps and more); automobilia (a Sprint car, several Ford flat-head V-8 engines and more); and many rare and vintage toys (to include some race car-style toys).
Then, on Friday, Oct. 15, at 12 noon (CST), Matthews Auctions, LLC will hold its annual Fall Peotone Petroliana & Vintage Advertising Auction, at 710 West Street in Peotone, Ill. Featured will be the oil bottle collection of Ron Throckmorton, the Texaco collection from the estate of Gerald Bunker of Hays, Kan., the Tydol/Flying A collection of Henry Romanfsky of Rochester, N.Y., and other items.
Then, on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. (PST), Matthews Auctions, LLC will conduct a neon sign auction from the Hendershaw estate in Escondido, Calif. Featured will be over 50 quality neon signs, plus a 1947 Chrysler Windsor Town & Country Woody car and a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe 2-door convertible, along with other vintage cars, petroliana items, automobilia, Coca-Cola and soda collectibles, a vintage wooden telephone booth, pay phones, air meters, gas pumps and other items.
After that, a huge two-day estate sale will be held Nov. 6-7 for the collections of Joe Srholez of Sussex, N.J., at 823 North O'Bannon in Raymond, Ill., at 10 a.m. (CST). Also sold will be the Art Childers collection of Evansville, Ind., and more of the oil bottle collection of Ron Throckmorton. The Nov. 6 session will feature vintage automotive toys, oil and additive cans, petroliana and automobilia signs (mostly porcelain, painted steel and cardboard), gas pumps, vintage soda machines and more.
The Nov. 7 session will be a continuation of the Nov. 6 offerings, but with a few surprises. Toys will include over 45 lots of promo cars, Metal Craft trucks, a Steelcraft Bimp & Mack pedal truck, over 100 lots of Japanese tin litho cars, toy cars, trucks and airplanes (some new in the box), German toys (to include Bing Lehman and others), an arcade cast iron gas pump, toy gas stations and many other items. Also sold will be mascots and original Packard art that was used in magazine advertisements.
The year will conclude with an Antiques, Toys & Advertising Auction just in time for Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 11, also at 823 North O'Bannon Road in Raymond, Ill., at 10 a.m. (CST).
