News-Antique.com - Jul 26,2010 - A July 14th Sale by Litchfield County Auctions of American furniture, folk art, decorations and paintings as well as European antiques and fine art produced enthusiastic bidding across a variety of collecting categories.
The total for this sale was close to a half million dollars. Close to 2,300 bids were placed with winning bidders hailing from 31 states and four foreign countries. All bidding was conducted online through iGavelAuctions.com.
The top selling lot of the auction was Eugene Galien-Laloue’s ‘Snowy Parisian Boulevard at Dusk’ a gouache, watercolor and pencil on paper, unusually laid over canvas. Estimated at $20-30,000 it sold for $31,200 to the English trade. Two other French artworks sold well also, both prints by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: ‘Mademoiselle Marcelle Lender, en Buste’ sold for $4,680 while ‘Guy et Mealy, dans Paris qui Marche’ sold for $4,440.
The second top seller and several other strong results were antique English mahogany furniture. A very large, period George III breakfront bookcase topped its $5,000-7,000 estimate, selling for $9,600. A smaller, Regency, 19th Century model sold for $5,880. A classical style 18th or 19th century carved mahogany wine basin in need of restoration quadrupled its $1,000-1,500 estimate to close at $4,320. Other decorative art highlights included a variety of items. A circa 1896 Steinway & Sons Mahogany Baby Grand Piano sold just under its high estimate for $6,960. An assembled set of eleven Royal Vienna plates, late 19th C., were estimated to bring $1000-1500 and sold for $6,300.
