Antique & Vintage Purses:
This popular topic includes an historical timeline of the creation and use of the pocketbook, workbag and purse from 17th Century Europe and US concluding with molded “plastic” purses of 1940s through 1960s. Kate presents a fascinating array of purses from each period and each decade of the first half of the 20th Century. Since the very first “purse” was carried by a man over 2,500 years ago, this topic is not just for the ladies!
Examples presented include the early German ring mesh process, hand worked Civil War era coin purses, fine Art Deco flapper bags created by the Whiting & Davis Co, Victorian hand worked beaded purses, early molded Lucite & Bakelite designs and genuine reptile leather creations of the 20th Century.
Antique & Vintage Purses, Millinery & Footwear:
Including an abbreviated history of antique & vintage purses, this lecture adds styles of hats and footwear of the Victorian, Edwardian and Roaring Twenties Flapper eras. At first functional necessities, they slowly evolved into works of art in their own right.
Antique Clothing & Accessories of Edwardian and Roaring Twenties Flapper Eras:
Changes in culture and style of the demure Edwardian Art Nouveau period which contrasted and transitioned into the raucous, often carefree styles of the Great Gatsby Art Deco movement is this topic of discussion. This talk will also touch on how the Great Depression and Prohibition altered clothing and accessory styles of the times. A variety of clothing and accessories will be presented.
Antique & Vintage Vanity Collectibles
Another popular and highly entertaining subject for discussion is Kate’s presentation, Antique & Vintage Vanity Collectibles including Ladies’ & Gentlemen’s cosmetics and toiletry items made popular by early Hollywood Regency screen legends, hair concoctions & implements, various toxic potions & powders banned in today’s markets. Examples of Edwardian, Flapper and some older Victorian vanity items will be displayed and discussed.
Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts & Art Deco Movements
While many enjoy the vast styles & designs of the classic art movements, some are interested to learn the basics regarding the differences each style represents and the time period in which they were popular. Kate gives a brief history of each movement while providing examples through the presentation of antique treasures from each period. Photographic examples of period architecture and selected World’s Fair memorabilia are also presented and discussed. A handout including timeline of Movements and related terms is provided for audience members.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own topic related show and tell items for free informal evaluations. A question and answer session follows each hour long talk. The talks themselves are informal in nature with participation of audience members. Photos and actual example items are often passed through the audience for hands-on inspection and enjoyment. Kate works with her own assistant to ensure ease and flow of lecture and audience interaction. While specific topics for discussion are outlined, talks may be tailored to suit particular subjects and interests.
