This is the time of year when collectors of Red Wing stoneware, dinnerware and art pottery reach a level of anticipatory excitement that is unmatched throughout the rest of the year. In only a few weeks, thousands of collectors will converge upon their favorite historic Mississippi River town for the Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS) National Convention. Scheduled for July 8-10 in Red Wing, Minn., the theme for this year’s event is “Acres and Acres of Red Wing.”
The Red Wing Collectors Society is one of the oldest most active, engaged and knowledgeable clubs in the United States. You can lean more about this great group at www.redwingcollectors.org, which is the No. 1 source of Red Wing Pottery knowledge in the world. Its famous national convention is scheduled for July 8-10, 2010, in — where else — Red Wing, Minn.
The Antique Trader Treasure Hunt prize package includes a one-year membership in the RWCS, which includes the official newsletter six times a year, a rare 2009 RWCS convention commemorative advertising bean pot (available only to RWCS members and limited to 3,600 pieces) AND a 2010 RWCS convention commemorative, yet to be released, that’s only available to members at the July 8-10 convention.
RWCS members have a wide variety of activities and educational seminars to attend during Convention. A narrated tour of the historical sites and a "Crock Hunt" scavenger hunt around the city of Red Wing, tours of the RWCS Foundation Museum, and the KidsView activities are major events. There is also a special display room at Red Wing High School, where members create their own unique displays for the education and enjoyment of attendees, combined with some fun and creative competition. Other events throughout the week include street sales throughout the community, an annual business meeting, the Potter’s Picnic open to the public at Red Wing’s Colvill Park, a string of auctions highlighted by the always popular RWCS Thursday Night Auction at Red Wing High School, and the official RWCS Show & Sale at Red Wing High School that begins for members at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 10 and opens to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The annual RWCS Brat Feed and pre-registration badge pickup will take place outside Red Wing’s Pottery Place, 2000 Old West Main St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7. New at the event this year will be a New Membership Tent for people seeking materials and information about joining the RWCS. Members will be on hand to answer questions about Red Wing’s rich pottery history, and dealers in stoneware and pottery will be set up in the parking lot. Red Wing’s KWNG 105.9 FM radio station
