Ulysses S. Grant: (1822-1885) He graduated in the West Point class of 1843, and fought in the Mexican War. Was Commander-in-Chief of all Union armies 1863-65. He fought in the Civil War battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and in the Appomattox campaign. He received the formal surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, on April 9, 1865. Served as 18th President of the United States 1869-1877.
