Need Unique Wedding Gift Ideas? Try Vintage Stemware Need to buy wedding gifts? Tired of giving the same old thing? Not sure what to give? Vintage stemware is a perfect solution. Your couple will treasure the high quality and unique design.
News-Antique.com - May 03,2010 - You can find vintage stemware in clear sparkling crystal plus a rainbow of colors. What’s unique about the older stemware compared to what you will find today in good department stores are the variety of shapes and sizes and the gorgeous etched designs.
Vintage glass makers like Cambridge or Fostoria made an array of shapes, including water goblets, wine goblets, cordials, liquour cocktails, sherbets, plus tumblers of all sizes from tiny whiskey to large ice teas. Some designs even had multiple sizes for different wines or cocktails; for example separate glasses for sherry, claret, Rhine wine or just plain wine. If you have friends who enjoy wines or other beverages then they’ll have fun using a couple different sizes and shapes.
Etched goblets are particularly nice if your giftees enjoy fine dining and using dinnerware that is as beautiful and as special as the meal. The stemware complements the choice of wine and adds to the experience of the meal. If your giftees enjoy a liqueur after dinner then a small set of cordials would be perfect. Cordial glasses are little treasures that hold about an ounce and look like miniature wine glasses used for liqueurs or sipping after dinner drinks like Amaretto.
Champagne sherbets are usually shorter than water goblets and have a wider mouth. A pair to use for the toast at the wedding reception would be lovely and after the wedding the couple can use them for fruit, cocktails, champagne, iced drinks or ice cream.
You can choose to give stemware that all matches or mix complementary patterns or colors. It would be fun to give a set of goblets in the same style in different colors or that are the same blank but have different etched designs. For example, Fostoria Glass made a wonderful shape called Fairfax that you can find in clear crystal, rose pink, azure blue, a gorgeous green, topaz and amber. Fostoria sold the stems plain, without any decoration – and they are beautiful – and used them for the June, Vernon and Versailles etched patterns. A set combining these etched patterns and colors would be spectacular.
The other point about gifting stemware is you can add to the set over time. Let’s say you give a pair of cordials for a wedding gift. At Christmas follow up with the wine goblets this year and water goblets next time.
