Biographical Sketch of General George F. Shepley:
(1819-78) Born in Saco, Maine, his father, Ether, was a United States Senator and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. George graduated from Dartmouth College, studied law, and started a practice in Bangor, Me. He later served as United States district attorney for the state of Maine. He was commissioned colonel of the 12th Maine Infantry in November 1861, and later accompanied the Union forces under the command of General Benjamin F. “Beast” Butler on their expedition against the Confederate city of New Orleans, La. After the capture of the city on May 1, 1862, General Butler made Shepley the post commander at New Orleans, and military governor of Louisiana in June, with Shepley being promoted to rank of brigadier general. General Shepley continued in this capacity until the spring of 1864, when he was assigned to the District of Eastern Virginia under Butler again. At the close of the war he operated as chief of staff to General Godfrey Weitzel, and became military governor of Richmond, Va. in April 1865.

Shepley, Military Governor of Louisiana. Backmark: E. Jacobs & Co., 93 Camp St., New Orleans. Very sharp image. Light age toning and wear. Rare.
