Rock and Roll Holy Grails are few and far between. Some musical instruments, clothing and documents are treasured for their unique importance to the genre. Most remain with the family, or in a Museum, with the most historically important objects often never coming up for sale.
While at a public appraisal event at the Memphis Area Home Builders Association Home Show in March 2010, Gary Sohmers, appraiser, radio talk show host and a popular character who appears as an appraiser in Memorabilia on the PBS TV program “Antiques Roadshow” handled over 700 people who came in with artifacts, autographs and stories about Elvis Presley along with other collectibles. Event Promoter Joe Callaway made the front page of the Memphis Commercial Appeal Newspaper with his collection of unpublished photographs of Elvis on “Dance Party” TV show filmed in Memphis with host Wink Martindale in 1956 valued at $30,000.
That article was seen by a gentleman who had worked in a law firm in Memphis that handled Real Estate who had retrieved a file folder from the trash at his firm back in 1987 when they purged their old files. To purchase Graceland, Elvis gave the current owner Ruth Brown Moore the Property on Audobon Rd. The terms and conditions are detailed and it is signed by Elvis, Vernon and Gladys Presley. He also had the documents for Elvis’ purchase of the Circle G Ranch, then known as Twinkletown Farms, just south of Memphis in Mississippi where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned.
After relaying reasonable expectations on the insurance company replacement cost value of such a historically important set of documents about a building on the National Historic Register, Gary was asked by the man how he would go about possibly selling the documents.
Gary chose Philip Weiss Auctions of Oceanside New York to handle the sale of the important documents in a Pop Culture auction coming up on April 25, 2010. Philip Weiss Auctions recently sold the marriage certificate for the union of Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley for $80,000, and regularly handles Elvis memorabilia. Phil also appears as
