News-Antique.com - Dec 06,2009 - From flamboyant show-stoppers in jewellery, paintings, silver or sculpture to useful furniture and oriental carpets, around 20 exhibitors offer a broad range of
quality and affordable pieces. The fair is a great day out, both for interior designers, private customers and avid collectors seeking unique and unusual furnishings or simply just to browse and chat to the dealers. All the exhibitors are members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association or LAPADA, the UK’s largest association of professional art and antiques dealers. For the three days of the fair The Lakeside Suite is transformed into a dazzling antiques emporium and is filled with a strong contingent of dealers from the north of England including carpets from M&N Oriental Rugs, Art Nouveau and Art
Deco glass from Solo Antiques, silver and jewellery from well-known Lancashire jewellers Charles Howell Jeweller of Oldham, an exciting modern and contemporary display from Jo Bennett Original Pictures, oils and watercolours from Baron Fine Art, both from Cheshire, and all periods of furniture from Church Street Antiques of Altrincham, Cheshire based Melody Antiques and Graham Smith Antiques from Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Highlights include an unusual Victorian coromandel stationery box with a secret compartment, maybe for clandestine love letters, from Graham Smith Antiques,
(price £1,400). Maybe a lovely 1960’s kingfisher brooch in 18 carat gold (price £1,200) or a cabochon and ruby diamond ring (price £3,250) will suit that special
occasion from Plaza. Sculpture is well represented at the fair and a handsome piece is a silvered bronze figure of a knight resting on his sword by Georges Omerth,
c1900, from Sussex dealers Garrett & Hurst Sculpture. There is plenty of choice in the picture section including a pencil drawing from Baron Fine Art entitled
‘Ardwick Empire’ (price £1,500) by Arthur Delaney (1927-1987), who was born in Manchester, the son of well known northern comedian Frank Randle. Another
interesting area of collecting is original book illustrations and Books Illustrated are showing the originals of ‘Parrot Cat’ by Nicola Bayley, published by Walker Books
for Marks & Spencer in 1984 - this is the first time any of her published works have been offered for sale (price £2,250). Of local interest is a Royal Lancastrian lustre
vase designed by Richard Joyce in 1913 from Prestwich dealers St James/Authentiques (price £625).
The Macdonald Kilhey Court Hotel & Spa is a charming Victorian style country house hotel, very well positioned to serve the north-west of England being minutes
away from the M6 and under an hour from Liverpool and Manchester. It has superb leisure club facilities and makes the ideal weekend break or simply a day
out. Antiques fair visitors, who book to eat in the Laureate restaurant, will be offered a free glass of wine.
The benefiting charity for the fair is Derian House Children’s Hospice (www.derianhouse.co.uk), which gives specialist palliative care and support for
seriously and terminally ill children in the local area.
