“Buyers in this economy are determined to spend wisely,” says Tom Martin, specialist in charge of the Estates department. “The pieces we have selected are very desirable and the estimates are extremely attractive.”
Jewelry expert Sarah Churgin concurs. “The property that Tom and I have placed in this auction will appeal both to the serious collector of museum-worthy work and those seeking beautiful holiday gifts, priced right.”

The sale features old master paintings, 19th C. landscapes and portraits, regional art, portrait miniatures, prints and sculpture. Featured is lot 27, a 17th/18th C. religious painting entitled "Holy Face of Edessa" depicting Abgar, King of Edessa, asking Christ to visit and cure him, estimated at $3,000 - $5,000. From local estates, find Lot 251, a charming 19th C. portrait of a girl with a Rabbit and Dog, estimated at $2,000 - $3,000, and Lot 264, a portrait of a zebra by American artist William E. Skilling, estimated at $3,000 - $4,000. The sale includes a rich selection of bronze and marble statuary. Among the most notable: lot 455, Geisha Grace, a 20th C. bronze by Susanne Vertel, estimated at $3,000 - $4,000; lot 11, a pair of early 20th C. classical bronze figures, estimated at $1,000 - $1,500; lot 177, Walking Elephant, a bronze on stand signed Barye, estimated at $2,500 - $3,500; and lot 184, a 19th/20th C. sculpture of a lion in marble, estimated at $800 - $1,200.
Continental Decorative Arts and Furnishings
The sale includes numerous chests and tables, both English and continental. Featured are lot 23, a 19th C. Dutch marquetry six drawer desks, estimated at $2,000 - $3,000 and lot 22, an 18th C. English Queen Anne secretary desk with later accoutrements in black lacquer with Chinoiserie decoration, estimated at $10,000 - $15,000. This sale contains many French 19th C. clocks, including lot 1, a Black Forest mantle clock, carved with pheasants and foliage, estimated at $1,500 - $2,500. Among the Grandfather clocks are three from the 19th C., lot 143, a 19th C. country French grandfather clock; lot 144, an English clock in mahogany and lot 145, an English grandfather clock in oak. There is porcelain by Meissen, Royal Vienna, Royal Worchester, KPM and glass by Loetz and Lalique.
