News-Antique.com - Oct 08,2009 - Garth’s Auctions of Delaware, Ohio is pleased to announce its 49th Annual Thanksgiving Americana auction on November 27-28, 2009 will include original photography by the late Robert Davidoff from his book The Kennedy Family Album -a window to the Kennedy legacy that has come to exemplify mid-20th century American culture and politics. In conjunction with the sale of the Kennedy photography, which will be one segment of the larger Americana sale including period furniture, art, and accessories as well as other historic Presidential material, the Columbus Museum of Art and the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, will each be hosting exhibits of the Kennedy photography during the first 2 weeks of November.
The exhibit, Behind Camelot: The Kennedy Family Album, presents a selection of photographs capturing three generations of Kennedy families at ease and at play. The photographs were taken by Robert Davidoff who was the photographer for the Kennedy family in Palm Beach for almost 50 years. Because most of the photographs have never before been seen by the general public, Behind Camelot offers a truly unique snapshot of America’s royal family - a family with allure that transcends generations - at a time when the public is still mourning the loss of Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
The public’s first opportunity to experience this exhibit will be at the Columbus Museum of Art of Columbus, Ohio. For two weeks only from November 3 - 15, 2009, the CMA will feature a selection of the original Davidoff photographs on loan from Garth‘s. Located in the Kennedy family enclave of Hyannisport, Massachusetts, the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which is a multi-media encounter celebrating the playful side of the Kennedys, will also include a limited run exhibit of the Davidoff images from Wednesday, November 4 through Sunday, November 8.
The photographs from Behind Camelot are part of a larger collection of original photography by Davidoff used to create the book The Kennedy Family Album which was released in September 2008. The book shows the extended Kennedy clan on holiday in Palm Beach, Hyannisport, Sun Valley, and other favorite vacation spots. As a fixture in the Kennedy’s Palm Beach home, Davidoff was able to capture the family during their moments of fun and relaxation . Images in the book and the auction include a youthful John F. Kennedy, a young Jackie surprising her husband on the tarmac of the Palm Beach airport, and matriarch Rose Kennedy leading a family sing-along, just to name a few.
The late Robert Davidoff, a freelance photographer for United Press International, first photographed then President-elect John F. Kennedy along side President Herbert Hoover and Ambassador Joseph Kennedy during a party in Palm Beach. He was the photographer in residence at the Kennedy’s Palm Beach home up until his death in 2004.
