Babe Ruth-Bob Hope-Bing Crosby Signed Golf Scorecard in Auction A one-of-a-kind golf scorecard jointly signed by Babe Ruth, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby will be offered in a public auction by Heritage Auction Galleries, October 1, 2009.
News-Antique.com - Sep 10,2009 - (Dallas, Texas) -- A unique 1942 golf scorecard jointly signed by a foursome composed of baseball icon Babe Ruth, world renowned entertainers Bob Hope and Bing Crosby and then-California Governor Culbert Olson will be offered in a public auction of historic sports memorabilia by Heritage Auction Galleries (www.HA.com) in Dallas, Texas and online, October 1, 2009.
"Ruth, Hope, Crosby and Governor Olson participated in a charity golf match in Sacramento, California on March 1, 1942. Their scores were kept by Charles Robertson, a member of the golf club, who followed them on the course that day and obtained their autographs in the clubhouse after the match," said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage.
The autographs are signed in pencil on the scorecard from the Sacramento Municipal Golf Course that was kept by Robertson and then his heirs the past 67 years.
"My grandfather was an avid golfer, but we didn't know he still had this autographed scorecard until we were going through his possessions after he passed away in 1993 at the age of 72. It was a surprise to find it," said Steve Hansen of Sacramento, who consigned the scorecard on behalf of his family.
"The match play tournament scorecard only goes through the 16th hole. Hope and Crosby apparently had won at that point, and left to catch a flight to attend a charity dinner elsewhere that evening," explained Hansen, who said he inherited his enjoyment of golf from his grandfather and father.
The pre-auction estimate for the one-of-a-kind autographed scorecard is $2,000 to $4,000.
