News-Antique.com - Sep 03,2009 - Skinner, one of the nation’s leading auction houses, will host an auction of fine jewelry at its Boston gallery on Tuesday, September 15th at 10:00 a.m. Highlights include a number of rare and impressive colored diamonds and gemstones – the vast collection of famed ballroom dancer, Verna E. Winegar – and a wide selection of unique Art Deco pieces. More than 650 lots will be featured in the upcoming sale.
Colored Diamonds and Gemstones
The sale features a number of rare colored diamonds and gemstones including a fancy colored diamond and diamond twin-stone bypass ring, set with a fancy intense blue pear shaped diamond weighing 1.26 cts., and a fancy brownish pink diamond weighing 1.20 cts., flanked by graduating diamond baguettes, platinum mount (lot 308, est. $80/120,000); a Burma ruby and diamond ring, Van Cleef & Arpels, prong-set with an oval-cut ruby weighing 8.587 cts., (lot 631, est. $110/130,000). The accompanying AGL report states that the ruby is natural of Classic Mogok Burma origin with no evidence of heat enhancement. Additional highlights include; a vivid yellow diamond solitaire, set with an old European-cut diamond weighing 3.65 cts., (lot 390, est. $15/25,000); and a Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring, prong-set with a cushion-cut sapphire weighing 5.58 cts., flanked by tapered diamond baguettes, platinum mount (lot 645, est. $120/140,000).
Additional diamond and gemstone highlights include an 18K white gold, freshwater pearl and diamond necklace, set through with full cut diamonds suspending a fringe of sixty-five pearls (Lot 404, est. $10/15,000); an antique Islamic Intaglio and gem-set pendant necklace by JAR composed of chalcedony and pale sapphire beads and Oriental pearls, suspending an antique chalcedony Islamic intaglio, framed by sapphires and diamond melee, mounted in silver and gold, signed JAR PARIS (lot 422, est. $15/20,000); and an Edwardian diamond bracelet, composed of fancy scrolling links, set throughout with old European and old mine-cut diamonds (lot 624, est. $10/15,000).
The sale also features a number of lovely Cartier pieces including a coral and diamond flower clip/brooch, Paris c. 1960, high relief carved rose centering a full-cut diamond, petals highlighted by pave-set diamond edges, signed Cartier, Paris (lot 652, est. $10/15,000); a citrine and diamond Cartier cuff bracelet, c. 1940, set with a larger citrine and flanked by pave-set diamond scrolls and platinum and 14k gold mount (lot 635, est. $15/20,000); and a matching citrine and diamond ring, (lot 636, est. $4/6,000).
Finally, the sale includes a gorgeous 18k gold, carved emerald, coral and onyx suite, Italy, c. 1970s (lot 573, est. $6/8,000). The geometric collar is set with onyx and coral panels and bezel-set with carved emerald cabochons, and includes earclips. The suite, with its bold colors and strong geometric motifs, certainly reflects the Egyptian Revival style of the 1970s, influenced by the 1972 Treasures of Tutankhamen exhibition.
