THE £2,000 PENNY A metal detectorist has found a 1200 year old coin in ploughed field. Now it is set to sell for £2,000 in a sale at London specialist coins and medals auctioneers Morton & Eden on June 9.
Mr Nobbs said he thought the coin was simply a casual loss found in the field, rather than deliberately concealed there. “As a metal detectorist, I feel deeply humbled by the variety of artifacts I have found, but because of its sheer rarity, this wonderful Saxon penny is one of the most exciting things ever and most importantly I have recorded it with PAS.”
Mr Nobbs’ other notable find was a complete Bronze Age gold penannular ring, which is now in Hertford Museum
Pictures show Clive Nobbs with the Cynethryth penny and a close up of the coin showing the queen’s portrait.
