Green Decorating Room By Room TIAS Antique Dealers & Owners of “An American Antique Adventure” & the “Missouri Peddler” are seeing GREEN. They are sharing MONEY SAVING ideas while creating warm & inviting spaces on a RECESSION bud
was “totally modern 1966” with lots of blue & green glass! Honestly I hated it by the time it was delivered!
We moved to the Eastern Shore of Md. and purchased a home in what was the beginning of a designated “historic area”. He painted the hardwood floors & old oak furniture white & bright blue! It was then I knew that marriage was doomed! And I really needed to know what “style” was me!
With little or no money for “new things” for my new home I walked over to a neighbor hood auction and got hooked! The “Antiquing Bug” bit HARD! I also had a friend who worked for a repo firm. I was paying $5 for chestnut & oak dressers. I taught myself to restore furniture & used them in my home until they too went off to college.
In our brick & mortar & TIAS internet shops we only offer utilitarian goods & furniture. We try to show collectors new and unusual ways to use ordinary things. Decorative elements range form Victorian windows converted to mirrors by my husband, to cabriolets, stained glass & folk art!
My feeling is that “your style” develops is some very visible ways. You will begin to recognize aspects of your particular style when you enter a room! That room instantly makes you feel warm & cozy inside! When that room makes you want to sit down & stay awhile, that’s YOUR STYLE! Don’t worry if you think you have “No style at all” step by step, piece by piece it all will develop.
We love coming home to our very own “Andy of Mayberry” home. Once inside we can forget the harsh realties of 2009. Although its a 1975 rancher, inside my home it’s always 1945! In todays economy we are spending more and more time at home. It costs nothing to spend your day off touring antique stores, thrift shops, flea markets and new furniture stores. YES tour those new stores & then you will really appreciate that “old is new” headboard you just purchased at our co-op for $150 instead of $500 new.
Whenever my girls saw a room design, a piece of furniture, an antique, a piece of art that moved them -- they tor out the picture & put it in a folder! They also took a small digital camera with them to record idea discovered while visiting large furniture stores, antique malls and during “open house” events. Capture the moments that make you say, “I love it!”
It was apparent the first spring catalog I received in the mail, the furniture is NOT cold modern, the rooms shown are very warm and inviting.
